🔧 Murano - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the spin-on oil filter, and refills your Murano with fresh SAE 0W-20 oil. Regular oil changes protect the 3.5L V6 from sludge, wear, and internal damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on firm, level ground and keep the transmission in Park.
  • ⚠️ Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Warm oil drains better, but hot oil and exhaust parts can cause burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil away from belts, electrical connectors, and the exhaust system.
  • ⚠️ Do not overtighten the aluminum oil pan drain plug.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting API certification - Qty: 6 US quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Murano on firm, level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for about three minutes, then shut it off and wait five minutes.
  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear wheels.
  • 📖 A crush washer is a soft sealing washer designed to deform once; install a new one every oil change.
  • 📏 The approximate refill capacity with a new filter is 5.1 US quarts (4.8 liters). The dipstick remains the final authority.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Pull the hood-release handle by the driver’s left foot.
  • Release the secondary latch under the front edge of the hood and raise the hood.
  • Remove the oil filler cap by hand. This lets the old oil drain more freely.
  • Pull out the dipstick by hand, wipe it with a shop towel, and set it back in place.

Step 2: Safely Raise the Front

  • Position the 3-ton floor jack under the front-center reinforced lifting point.
  • Raise the front high enough to place 3-ton jack stands beneath both front side lifting points.
  • Lower your Murano onto the stands and gently push the body to verify stability.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as backup support.
  • Never crawl underneath an unstable vehicle.

Step 3: Open the Lower Access Area

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to remove any clips securing the oil-service access panel.
  • Move the panel aside so the oil pan drain plug and oil filter are accessible.
  • Keep every removed clip organized for installation.

Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Place the 10-quart drain pan directly below the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use the 14mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug carefully by hand and allow the oil to drain completely.
  • Remove and discard the old crush washer. Clean the drain plug with a shop towel.
  • Wait until the oil has slowed to an occasional drip.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Place one new crush washer on the cleaned drain plug.
  • Thread the plug into the oil pan by hand until fully seated. It should turn easily without binding.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the drain plug area clean with a shop towel.
  • Starting by hand prevents damaged oil-pan threads.

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Reposition the drain pan beneath the oil filter because oil will spill when it is loosened.
  • Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap wrench, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to turn the filter counterclockwise.
  • Finish unscrewing the filter by hand while keeping it upright.
  • Check that the old rubber sealing gasket came off with the filter. A gasket left on the engine can cause a major leak.
  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop towel.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
  • Thread the new filter clockwise by hand until the gasket first touches its mounting surface.
  • Tighten the filter by hand another two-thirds of a turn after gasket contact.
  • Do not use the filter wrench for final tightening unless the filter manufacturer specifically supplies a torque specification.
  • Write the mileage on the new filter.

Step 8: Reinstall the Access Panel

  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to align the lower access panel.
  • Push each retained clip into its original opening by hand until locked.
  • Verify the panel is secure and does not contact the exhaust system.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your Murano slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove both jack stands, then lower the vehicle slowly onto level ground.
  • Keep the wheel chocks installed until the service is complete.

Step 10: Add Fresh Engine Oil

  • Insert the engine-oil funnel into the oil filler opening.
  • Pour in approximately 4.8 US quarts of SAE 0W-20 oil, saving the remainder for final adjustment.
  • Remove the funnel and install the oil filler cap securely by hand.
  • Pull out the dipstick, wipe it with a shop towel, fully reinsert it, and remove it again.
  • Add small amounts through the funnel until the oil reaches the upper mark without going above it. Total capacity is approximately 5.1 US quarts (4.8 liters) with filter.

Step 11: Start the Engine and Inspect

  • Start the engine and confirm the red oil-pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds.
  • Shut the engine off immediately if the warning light remains on.
  • Let the engine idle for about 30 seconds while checking underneath for leaks at the filter and drain plug.
  • Shut the engine off and wait at least five minutes.
  • Use the dipstick and a shop towel to recheck the oil level. Add 0W-20 oil through the funnel in small amounts if needed.

Step 12: Reset the Oil Maintenance Reminder

  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering-wheel arrow and OK buttons to open Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter in the driver information display.
  • Select Reset, then confirm with the OK button.
  • If your display shows separate oil and filter reminders, reset both after verifying the service was completed.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the dipstick again after the first drive and after your Murano has rested on level ground for at least five minutes.
  • ✅ Inspect the drain plug and oil filter area for fresh oil leaks.
  • ✅ Confirm the oil filler cap and dipstick are fully installed.
  • ✅ Record the date, mileage, oil grade, and filter replacement.
  • ♻️ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take it with the old filter to an authorized oil-recycling facility. Never pour oil onto the ground or into a drain.
