🔧 Forester - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the top-mounted oil filter, and refills the engine with fresh synthetic oil. Regular oil changes protect the Forester’s timing components, bearings, and variable valve timing system.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on firm, level ground and never crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • 🧤 Warm oil drains better but can cause burns. Let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes before draining.
  • 🛑 Keep the parking brake engaged and place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this service.
  • ♻️ Collect all used oil and take it to an approved recycling facility. Never pour it onto the ground or into a drain.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm six-point socket
  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs
  • 65mm 14-flute oil filter socket (specialty)
  • 3/8-inch-drive 6-inch extension
  • Flat-tip screwdriver with 6-inch shaft
  • Oil drain pan with 6-quart minimum capacity
  • Oil funnel with 1-inch outlet
  • Engine oil measuring container with quart markings
  • Low-profile floor jack rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks rated for passenger vehicles
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil - Qty: 4.4 US quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain-plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚙 Park your Forester on level ground, select Park, engage the parking brake, and chock both rear wheels.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for approximately three minutes, shut it off, and wait 10-15 minutes so the oil is warm rather than dangerously hot.
  • 📏 Verify that the replacement filter matches the original before draining the oil.
  • 🛢️ Open all oil containers before going underneath the vehicle, but keep them upright and clean.
  • 📱 If an oil reminder is active, reset it only after the oil has been changed and the final level has been checked.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front

  • Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Use the low-profile 2-ton floor jack at the reinforced front-center jacking plate behind the engine undertray.
  • Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front side jacking points, then slowly lower your Forester onto them.
  • Gently push the body to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
  • Never work beneath a vehicle supported by a jack.

Step 2: Open the oil-filler cap

  • Open the hood and use your hand to loosen the yellow engine oil-filler cap counterclockwise.
  • Pull the dipstick out slightly by hand. This lets air enter so the oil drains smoothly.
  • Use shop towels to wipe dirt away from the filler opening without allowing debris inside.

Step 3: Access the drain plug

  • Position the 6-quart oil drain pan beneath the engine oil pan drain plug.
  • If the undertray service door blocks access, use the flat-tip screwdriver to release its retaining clip and open the door.
  • Confirm that you are beneath the engine oil pan, not the CVT transmission. The engine drain plug is positioned farther forward.

Step 4: Drain the old engine oil

  • Use the 14mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand while pushing it gently inward, then pull it away quickly so the oil enters the drain pan.
  • Allow the oil to drain until it slows to an occasional drip, usually 10 minutes.
  • Use shop towels to clean the plug and oil-pan sealing surface.

Step 5: Install the drain plug and new washer

  • Remove the old flattened crush washer from the drain plug by hand and install the new crush washer.
  • Thread the drain plug clockwise by hand until fully seated. Stop and restart if it does not turn easily.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to torque the drain plug to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs).
  • Use the flat-tip screwdriver to close and secure the undertray service door, if opened.
  • Hand-starting the plug prevents expensive thread damage.

Step 6: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan beneath the front of the engine in case oil spills.
  • The oil filter is mounted upright at the top-front of the engine. Use the 65mm 14-flute oil filter socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to turn it counterclockwise if it cannot be loosened by hand.
  • An oil filter socket is a cup-shaped tool that fits over the end of the filter.
  • Unscrew the filter by hand and keep it upright as you lift it away.
  • Use shop towels to clean the filter mounting surface.
  • Confirm the old rubber filter gasket came off with the filter. Two stacked gaskets will cause a major leak.

Step 7: Install the new oil filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved fingertip.
  • Thread the filter clockwise by hand until the gasket first touches its mounting surface.
  • From first gasket contact, tighten the filter by hand another approximately 3/4 turn. If the filter provides printed tightening directions, follow those directions.
  • Do not use the filter socket to overtighten the new filter.

Step 8: Lower the vehicle

  • Remove all tools and the drain pan from beneath your Forester.
  • Use the low-profile 2-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove both 2-ton jack stands, then use the floor jack to lower your Forester slowly onto level ground.

Step 9: Add fresh engine oil

  • Insert the 1-inch oil funnel into the engine oil-filler opening.
  • Use the marked oil measuring container and funnel to add approximately 4.2 US quarts of SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil.
  • Remove the funnel and install the filler cap clockwise by hand until secure.
  • Push the dipstick fully into its tube.

Step 10: Circulate the oil and inspect for leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for approximately 30 seconds. The oil-pressure warning lamp should turn off within a few seconds.
  • Shut the engine off immediately if the oil-pressure warning remains illuminated.
  • With the engine off, use the safety glasses and a flashlight-free visual inspection from above to check the filter area for leakage.
  • Wait five minutes on level ground before checking the oil level.

Step 11: Set the final oil level

  • Use a shop towel to wipe the dipstick clean, reinstall it fully by hand, and remove it again.
  • The oil should be between the low and full marks, ideally near the full mark without exceeding it.
  • If needed, use the oil funnel and measuring container to add oil in 100-150 ml increments.
  • Recheck after each addition. Total service capacity with filter replacement is approximately 4.4 US quarts (4.2 liters).
  • Install the dipstick and filler cap securely by hand.

Step 12: Reset the maintenance reminder

  • If your Forester has the upper multifunction display with maintenance settings, use the steering-wheel controls and select Settings > Maintenance > Engine Oil.
  • Set the next desired service date and distance, then save the setting with the steering-wheel control.
  • If that menu is not present, no electronic reset is required; the reminder may be managed through the paired maintenance application or dealer-programmed settings.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine, let it idle for one minute, and inspect the drain-plug and filter areas for fresh oil.
  • 📏 Shut the engine off, wait five minutes on level ground, and check the dipstick one final time.
  • 🛢️ Do not overfill. Oil above the dipstick’s full mark should be drained to the correct level.
  • 📝 Record the date, mileage, oil viscosity, and filter replacement.
  • ♻️ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take it with the old filter to an authorized oil recycler or service center in Sonīpat.
  • 🔍 Recheck the oil level and look for leakage after the first short drive.
