๐Ÿ”ง Sienna - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

Your Sienna uses a replaceable cartridge-style oil filter element inside a reusable housing. Drain the old oil, replace the filter and sealing rings, refill with the correct oil, and reset the maintenance reminder.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

Oil specification: SAE 0W-20 full synthetic meeting API SP or API SN/ILSAC GF-6A or GF-5 | Approximate refill with filter: 5.8 US quarts (5.5 liters)

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • โš ๏ธ Work on level, solid ground and never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ๐Ÿงค Warm oil can burn skin. Let the engine cool until the oil is warm, not hot.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Use the specified front-center lifting point and support both sides at the reinforced front support points.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Keep the transmission in Park and apply the parking brake.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnection is not required for this service.
  • โ™ป๏ธ Collect all used oil and take it to an authorized recycling facility. Never pour it onto the ground or into a drain.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3-ton low-profile floor jack
  • 3-ton jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive extension, 6-inch
  • 64mm 14-flute oil filter housing socket (specialty)
  • 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench, 10-80 ft-lb
  • Oil drain pan, 8-quart minimum
  • Oil funnel
  • Oil filter drain adapter (specialty)
  • Small plastic pick
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil - Qty: 6 US quarts
  • Cartridge engine oil filter kit with housing O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing drain-plug O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil drain-plug gasket - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿš Park your Sienna on level pavement, shift into Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • ๐Ÿงฑ Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear wheels.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Run the engine for three to five minutes, then switch it off and wait at least five minutes.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Check the dipstick before starting. An unexpectedly low level can indicate leakage or oil consumption.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง A torque wrench clicks when the selected tightening force is reached; stop pulling at the first click.
  • ๐Ÿ“บ No infotainment service mode or scan tool is required.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Engine Compartment

  • ๐Ÿงค Put on the nitrile mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Open the hood, remove the oil-filler cap by hand, and place it somewhere clean.
  • ๐Ÿงป Pull out the dipstick by hand and wipe it with a shop towel. Leave it partially inserted so the crankcase can vent.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • ๐Ÿ›ž Position the 3-ton floor jack beneath the specified front-center lifting point and raise your Sienna.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front support points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
  • โœ‹ Push gently on the body to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
  • Never place stands beneath plastic panels.

Step 3: Remove the Oil-Service Access Panel

  • ๐Ÿ”ง Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive extension, and ratchet to remove the fasteners securing the oil-service panel or necessary lower-engine-cover section.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Place the fasteners in a small, safe area so none are lost.
  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Confirm that the drain plug and cartridge filter housing are accessible.

Step 4: Drain the Used Engine Oil

  • ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Position the 8-quart drain pan beneath the engine oil-pan drain plug.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen the drain plug. Finish removing it carefully by hand.
  • โš ๏ธ Move your hand away as the plug releases because warm oil exits quickly.
  • โณ Allow the oil to drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • ๐Ÿงป Clean the drain plug with a shop towel and remove the old gasket by hand.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Install one new drain-plug gasket, then start the plug several turns by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Do not reuse the crushed drain-plug gasket.

Step 5: Drain the Oil Filter Housing

  • ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Reposition the drain pan beneath the black cartridge-filter housing.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Use the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet on the small center drain plug in the filter housing and remove it carefully.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Remove the old small O-ring with the plastic pick. Do not scratch the sealing groove.
  • ๐Ÿงฐ Insert the oil filter drain adapter into the housing opening and allow the trapped oil to drain completely.
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Remove the drain adapter by hand after the flow stops.

Step 6: Replace the Cartridge Oil Filter

  • ๐Ÿ”ง Fit the 64mm 14-flute filter housing socket securely over the housing, then use the ratchet and extension to turn it counterclockwise.
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Unscrew the housing by hand and lower it upright to avoid spilling remaining oil.
  • ๐Ÿงป Pull out the old filter element by hand and clean the housing with shop towels.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Use the plastic pick to remove the large housing O-ring. Remove only the O-ring located in its groove; do not disturb the fixed plastic ring near the housing flange.
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Coat the new large O-ring with clean 0W-20 oil and install it into the correct housing groove. Do not twist it.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Push the new cartridge filter element fully into the housing by hand.
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Thread the housing into the engine by hand until its O-ring contacts the mounting surface.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Use the 64mm 14-flute housing socket and torque wrench to tighten the filter housing to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Lubricate the new small drain-plug O-ring with clean 0W-20 oil and install it on the center plug.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Use the ratchet interface and torque wrench to tighten the center drain plug to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
  • Plastic housings crack easily; never overtighten.

Step 7: Reinstall the Lower Cover

  • ๐Ÿงป Use shop towels to clean spilled oil from the oil pan, drain plug, filter housing, and lower cover.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Position the service panel and start every fastener by hand.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the panel fasteners snugly. Do not overtighten fasteners installed into plastic clips.

Step 8: Lower the Vehicle

  • ๐Ÿ”ง Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift your Sienna slightly off the jack stands.
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Remove both jack stands, then lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.
  • ๐Ÿงฑ Leave the wheel chocks in place until the service is complete.

Step 9: Refill the Engine

  • ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Insert the oil funnel into the filler opening and add approximately 5.5 US quarts of 0W-20 oil.
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Remove the funnel and install the oil-filler cap securely by hand.
  • ๐Ÿงป Fully insert the cleaned dipstick.

Step 10: Circulate the Oil and Check the Level

  • ๐Ÿš Start the engine and let it idle for approximately 30 seconds. The oil-pressure warning should turn off within a few seconds.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Shut off the engine immediately if the oil-pressure warning remains illuminated or if oil leaks underneath.
  • โณ Switch off the engine and wait at least five minutes on level ground.
  • ๐Ÿงป Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a shop towel, insert it fully, and remove it again.
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Add 0W-20 oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level is near the upper mark without exceeding it. Total capacity with filter is approximately 5.8 US quarts (5.5 liters).
  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Reinstall the dipstick and oil-filler cap securely by hand.

Step 11: Reset the Oil Maintenance Reminder

  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Switch the ignition on without starting the engine. For push-button start, press the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal.
  • ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Use the steering-wheel controls to open Settings > Vehicle Settings > Oil Maintenance.
  • โœ… Select Yes to reset the oil-maintenance data.
  • ๐Ÿ“‹ If a separate scheduled-maintenance reminder is displayed, select Settings > Vehicle Settings > Scheduled Maintenance > Yes.
  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Switch the ignition off after the reset confirmation appears.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿ” Run the engine for two minutes and inspect the drain plug and filter housing for fresh oil leakage.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Shut the engine off, wait at least five minutes, and check the dipstick again on level ground.
  • โš ๏ธ Do not overfill. Oil above the upper dipstick mark must be drained to the correct level.
  • ๐Ÿงป Wipe away any remaining spilled oil with shop towels.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Record the date, mileage, oil viscosity, and filter replacement.
  • โ™ป๏ธ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take the oil and used filter to an authorized recycler or service center.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost
