🔧 Suburban - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

Your Suburban’s engine oil and filter should be replaced together. Fresh oil protects the 5.3L V8 from wear, while the new filter removes contaminants circulating through the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool before reaching beneath the engine. Nearby components can cause severe burns.
  • 🛑 Never work under your Suburban while it is supported only by a jack.
  • 🧱 Use wheel chocks and properly rated ramps or jack stands on firm, level ground.
  • 🧤 Used engine oil is hazardous. Wear gloves and avoid prolonged skin contact.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • ♻️ Collect all used oil and take it to an authorized recycling facility.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 15mm six-point socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs
  • Oil filter cap wrench sized for replacement filter (specialty)
  • 15-quart drain pan
  • 6-inch automotive funnel
  • 3-ton vehicle ramps
  • 3-ton jack stands
  • 3-ton floor jack
  • Rubber wheel chocks
  • Mechanic’s creeper
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • ANSI-rated safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting GM dexos1 specification - Qty: 8 US quarts (7.6 liters)
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil drain-plug seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚙 Park your Suburban on firm, level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for approximately three minutes, then switch it off. Warm oil drains more easily, but it should not be dangerously hot.
  • 🧱 Place rubber wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
  • ⬆️ If additional access is needed, drive onto 3-ton vehicle ramps. Alternatively, raise the front using a 3-ton floor jack and support it at the designated frame lifting points with 3-ton jack stands.
  • ⏳ Wait at least five minutes after switching off the engine before removing the drain plug.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Oil Filler

  • Put on nitrile mechanic gloves and ANSI-rated safety glasses.
  • Open the hood and turn the engine oil filler cap counterclockwise by hand.
  • Lift the dipstick slightly from its tube. This allows air into the engine so the oil drains smoothly.
  • Place a shop towel around the filler opening to keep dirt from entering.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

  • Use a mechanic’s creeper to move beneath the front of your Suburban.
  • Locate the oil pan drain plug at the bottom of the engine oil pan.
  • Place the 15-quart drain pan below and slightly behind the plug because the oil initially exits with force.
  • Move the pan inward as the stream slows.

Step 3: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Use a 15mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug carefully by hand and allow the oil to drain into the 15-quart drain pan.
  • Wait until the flow slows to an occasional drip, normally 10-15 minutes.
  • Clean the drain plug and surrounding oil-pan surface with shop towels.
  • Replace the drain-plug seal if it is damaged, compressed, or supplied separately with the replacement parts.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Thread the drain plug clockwise by hand until fully seated. Hand-starting prevents crossed threads.
  • Use a 15mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the plug to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the plug. The oil pan threads can be damaged.

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the 15-quart drain pan beneath the vertically mounted oil filter near the oil pan.
  • Use the correctly sized oil filter cap wrench and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to turn the filter counterclockwise.
  • An oil filter cap wrench grips the filter housing so it can be loosened without crushing it.
  • Turn the filter slowly by hand after it breaks loose. Keep it upright while lowering it into the drain pan.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the filter mounting surface clean.
  • Confirm the old rubber filter gasket came off with the filter. Two stacked gaskets will cause a major leak.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh SAE 0W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber sealing gasket using a gloved finger.
  • Thread the new filter clockwise onto the mounting stud by hand.
  • When the gasket first contacts the mounting surface, tighten the filter an additional three-quarters to one full turn by hand, following the filter manufacturer’s marking.
  • Do not use the oil filter wrench to overtighten the new filter.

Step 7: Add Fresh Engine Oil

  • Place the 6-inch automotive funnel into the engine oil filler opening.
  • Pour in approximately 7.5 US quarts of SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil meeting GM dexos1 specification.
  • Remove the funnel and install the filler cap clockwise by hand until secure.
  • Push the dipstick completely into its tube.

Step 8: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

  • Make sure all tools and shop towels are clear of the engine compartment.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Verify the oil-pressure warning indicator switches off within a few seconds. Switch off the engine immediately if it stays illuminated.
  • Using a flashlight, inspect the drain plug and oil filter for dripping oil. Do not reach near moving or hot components.
  • Switch off the engine and wait at least five minutes.

Step 9: Set the Final Oil Level

  • If your Suburban was raised, carefully lower it onto level ground using the 3-ton floor jack and remove the 3-ton jack stands, or back it off the 3-ton vehicle ramps.
  • Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a shop towel, fully reinstall it, and remove it again.
  • Check that the oil reaches the upper marked area without exceeding it.
  • If needed, use the 6-inch automotive funnel to add SAE 0W-20 oil in small amounts. Recheck after each addition.
  • The total refill capacity with a new filter is approximately 8 US quarts (7.6 liters).

Step 10: Reset the Engine Oil-Life System

  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering-wheel controls to display Driver Information Center > Info > Oil Life.
  • Press and hold the check-mark button until the display resets to 100%.
  • Switch the ignition off, then switch it back on and verify the oil-life display remains at 100%.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Start the engine and inspect the filter and drain plug again for leakage.
  • 📏 Recheck the dipstick after the engine has been off on level ground for at least five minutes.
  • 🧽 Clean any spilled oil with shop towels before driving.
  • ♻️ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take both the oil and old filter to an authorized recycling or service facility.
  • 📝 Record the date and odometer reading for future maintenance.
  • 🛢️ Check the oil level again after the first drive.
