🔧 Avalon - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the cartridge-style oil filter, and refills your Avalon with fresh SAE 0W-20 oil. Regular oil changes protect the 3.5L V6 from wear and sludge.
Assumption: Your Avalon retains its original Toyota cartridge-filter housing and drain hardware.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level, solid ground and keep the transmission in Park.
- ⚠️ Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- ⚠️ Allow the exhaust system to cool before reaching underneath.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses because used oil can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Do not overtighten the plastic oil-filter housing; it can crack.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required for this service.

📋 Before You Begin
- 📍 Park your Avalon on level, solid ground and apply the parking brake.
- 🌡️ Run the engine for approximately three minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains more easily, but the exhaust should not be dangerously hot.
- 🛞 Place the vehicle ramps directly in front of the front tires. Drive up slowly, select Park, apply the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- 📖 A cartridge filter is a replaceable paper element installed inside a reusable filter housing.
- 🧰 A torque wrench tightens a fastener to a measured amount so it is neither loose nor damaged.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Engine Oil Fill Point
- Open the hood and locate the oil-filler cap on top of the engine.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand and set it on a clean shop towel.
- Pull out the engine-oil dipstick by hand and wipe it with a shop towel. Leave it slightly raised so air can enter while the oil drains.
Step 2: Access the Drain Plug and Filter
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before going underneath.
- If an underbody access panel blocks the service points, use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and flat plastic trim-clip tool to remove its fasteners.
- Keep each fastener with the panel so it returns to the same location.
Step 3: Drain the Old Engine Oil
- Position the 8-quart drain pan beneath the oil-pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the plug carefully by hand. Move your hand away as the oil begins flowing.
- Allow the oil to drain until only an occasional drip remains, usually 10-15 minutes.
- Remove the old drain-plug gasket and clean the plug with a shop towel.
Step 4: Reinstall the Oil-Pan Drain Plug
- Install one new drain-plug gasket onto the cleaned drain plug.
- Thread the plug clockwise by hand until fully seated. It should turn easily and must not be forced.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Hand-starting prevents expensive oil-pan thread damage.
Step 5: Drain the Oil-Filter Housing
- Move the 8-quart drain pan beneath the cartridge oil-filter housing.
- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and 3/8-inch extension to remove the small center drain plug from the bottom of the filter housing.
- Allow the housing to drain into the pan.
- Remove the old small O-ring from the center plug by hand. Lubricate the new small O-ring with clean 0W-20 oil and install it in its proper groove.
- Reinstall the center plug with the 3/8-inch extension and torque wrench. Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the Cartridge Filter Housing
- Fit the 64mm 14-flute cartridge oil-filter wrench squarely onto the filter housing.
- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and filter wrench to turn the housing counterclockwise.
- Support the housing by hand as the final threads disengage because it will contain oil.
- Pull the old paper filter element straight out of the housing by hand.
Step 7: Install the New Filter Element and O-Ring
- Remove the large old housing O-ring by hand. Do not scratch the plastic sealing surface.
- Clean the housing and its O-ring groove with shop towels.
- Lightly coat the new large O-ring with clean 0W-20 oil, then place it in the specified outer groove near the housing threads.
- Do not place the O-ring against the housing flange or twist it.
- Push the new cartridge filter element fully into the housing by hand.
Step 8: Reinstall the Filter Housing
- Thread the filter housing clockwise into the engine by hand until the O-ring contacts its sealing surface.
- Use the 64mm 14-flute cartridge oil-filter wrench and 3/8-inch torque wrench to torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Do not continue tightening after the torque wrench clicks.
- One click is enough at final torque.
Step 9: Reinstall the Underbody Panel
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and flat plastic trim-clip tool to reinstall every removed panel fastener.
- Tighten the small panel bolts only until snug. Do not crush the plastic panel.
- Wipe the drain-plug and filter-housing areas clean with shop towels so fresh leakage will be easy to identify.
Step 10: Refill the Engine
- Place the long-neck automotive funnel in the oil-filler opening.
- Pour in approximately 6.0 US quarts of SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil, then remove the funnel.
- Install the oil-filler cap clockwise by hand until secure.
- Fully insert the dipstick.
Step 11: Circulate the Oil and Check for Leaks
- Confirm that no tools or towels remain in the engine compartment.
- Start the engine and let it idle for approximately 30 seconds. The oil-pressure warning light should turn off within a few seconds.
- Shut the engine off immediately if the oil-pressure warning light remains illuminated.
- Use a flashlight and visually inspect the drain plug and filter housing for fresh oil leakage.
- Shut the engine off and wait at least five minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
Step 12: Set the Final Oil Level
- Pull the dipstick out by hand and wipe it clean with a shop towel.
- Insert it fully, remove it again, and read the oil level.
- Add small amounts through the long-neck automotive funnel until the level reaches the upper mark without passing it.
- The approximate refill capacity with a new filter is 6.4 US quarts (6.1 liters), but the dipstick is the final authority.
- Reinstall the dipstick and oil-filler cap securely by hand.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle
- Remove the wheel chocks from behind the rear tires by hand.
- With the area behind the vehicle clear, start the engine and slowly reverse your Avalon off the ramps.
- Park on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
Step 14: Reset the Maintenance Reminder
- Use the steering-wheel controls to display Trip A on the instrument cluster.
- Switch the ignition off.
- Press and hold the trip-reset button.
- While holding the button, press the engine switch twice without pressing the brake pedal. This turns the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Continue holding the button until the maintenance display counts down and shows zeros or confirms that the reset is complete.
- Release the button, switch the ignition off, and then start the engine normally.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm that the oil-pressure warning light switches off normally after the engine starts.
- 🔍 Inspect beneath your Avalon and around the filter housing after a short drive.
- 📏 Recheck the dipstick on level ground after shutting the engine off for at least five minutes.
- 🛢️ Add oil only if the level is below the upper mark. Do not overfill.
- ♻️ Transfer the used oil into a sealed container and take it with the old filter to an authorized used-oil collection or recycling facility.
- 📝 Record the date and odometer reading for your maintenance history.
