🔧 CR-V - CVT Transmission Fluid Change

This service drains and refills the continuously variable transmission, or CVT, with genuine Honda-specification fluid. Your CR-V requires Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid; conventional automatic-transmission fluid can damage the transmission.

  • ⚠️ Keep your CR-V level while draining and checking the fluid.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with four jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses because warm transmission fluid can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Use only Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid. Do not use Honda ATF DW-1, universal CVT fluid, or additives.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Drive your CR-V for approximately 10 minutes so the CVT fluid becomes warm, not extremely hot.
  • 🅿️ Park on a firm, level surface. Apply the parking brake and place the transmission in Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks securely before lifting the vehicle.
  • 📏 If lifting is necessary, raise and support all four corners at equal height so your CR-V remains level.
  • 🧴 Keep every container and pump hose clean. A small amount of dirt can damage a CVT.
  • ♻️ Prepare a sealed container for the used fluid and take it to an authorized oil-recycling facility.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure Your CR-V

  • Use the floor jack at the approved center lifting points, then support all four corners with four jack stands.
  • Confirm the vehicle is level and stable before going underneath it.
  • Gently push the body from the side. Stop if any stand shifts.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Cover

  • Use a trim-clip removal tool and small flat-blade screwdriver to release the plastic clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any retaining bolts.
  • Lower the shield carefully and arrange the fasteners in their removal order.

Step 3: Loosen the CVT Fill Plug First

  • Locate the fill plug on the upper portion of the transmission case.
  • Use a 17mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
  • Do not drain the transmission until you know the fill plug can be removed.
  • Remove the fill plug and inspect its seal.
  • Loosen the fill plug before draining.

Step 4: Drain the Old CVT Fluid

  • Place the 8-quart drain pan beneath the CVT drain plug.
  • Use the square end of the 3/8-inch drive ratchet directly in the drain-plug recess to loosen the plug.
  • Remove the plug carefully by hand and allow the fluid to drain completely.
  • Allow at least 10 minutes for the flow to slow to an occasional drip.
  • Dark fluid may indicate age, but metallic chunks or a strong burned odor can indicate internal damage.

Step 5: Measure the Drained Fluid

  • Pour the used fluid into the graduated measuring container and record the amount.
  • If the container markings are unclear, use the digital kitchen scale: one US quart of HCF-2 weighs approximately 1.8 pounds.
  • A normal AWD drain-and-fill is typically near 4.3-4.5 US quarts, but the final level check is authoritative.
  • Investigate for leaks if substantially less fluid drains out.

Step 6: Install the Drain Plug

  • Clean the drain plug and its seating surface with shop towels.
  • Install a new CVT drain-plug sealing washer with the flat side facing the transmission case.
  • Thread the plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Add New HCF-2 Fluid

  • Use the fluid-transfer pump with 3/8-inch hose to add Honda HCF-2 through the fill opening.
  • Add approximately the amount measured during draining. Do not add all five quarts automatically.
  • If the transmission was not known to be underfilled, begin with approximately 4.3 US quarts.
  • Install the fill plug and its new seal by hand.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the fill plug to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Circulate the New Fluid

  • Lower your CR-V to level ground using the floor jack, or leave it level on four jack stands.
  • Apply the brake pedal firmly and start the engine.
  • With the engine idling, move the selector slowly through Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Sport.
  • Pause for approximately three seconds in each position, then return the selector to Park.
  • Repeat the sequence once, then switch the engine off.

Step 9: Check the CVT Fluid Level

  • Perform this check promptly while your CR-V is level and the fluid remains warm.
  • Place the drain pan beneath the level-check plug on the side of the CVT case.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the level-check plug.
  • The level is correct when a small stream emerges and then slows to a drip.
  • If no fluid emerges, reinstall the plug temporarily. Use the fluid-transfer pump to add HCF-2 through the fill opening in 0.1-quart increments, repeating the check after each addition.
  • Allow excess fluid to drain until it becomes a slow drip. Do not intentionally overfill the CVT.

Step 10: Install the Level-Check Plug

  • Fit a new sealing washer to the level-check plug.
  • Thread the plug into the transmission case by hand.
  • Use the 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the level-check plug to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
  • Use shop towels to clean all fluid from the transmission case.

Step 11: Reinstall the Lower Cover

  • Position the lower splash shield and install its clips with the trim-clip removal tool.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the retaining bolts snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the small bolts or plastic fasteners.
  • Use the floor jack to remove the four jack stands and lower your CR-V completely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm there are no warning lights or unusual CVT noises.
  • 🔍 With the engine off, inspect the drain, fill, and level-check plugs for leaks.
  • 🚙 Take a gentle 10-minute test drive. Verify smooth engagement in Reverse and Drive.
  • 🛑 Recheck underneath for leaks after the test drive and again the following day.
  • 🧾 Record the mileage and fluid type. Under normal conditions, Honda’s Maintenance Minder code 3 indicates transmission-fluid service.
  • ♻️ Transfer the used fluid into sealed containers for responsible recycling.
